DNR Announces 2027 Seedling Availability and Tree Planting Milestone

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources highlights a milestone for Wisconsin’s Trillion Trees Pledge and encourages everyone to take action to bring Wisconsin closer to a resilient landscape.

The 50 millionth tree has been planted under Wisconsin’s Trillion Trees Pledge, a statewide commitment to plant 100 million trees by 2030.

The pledge, announced by Gov. Evers in 2021, is part of a global effort to accelerate nature-based solutions to the shifting precipitation and temperature patterns Wisconsin is experiencing. Also included in the pledge is a commitment to plant one million of the 100 million trees in urban areas, and to protect at least 125,000 acres of forestland.

In April 2026, the DNR announced that by the end of 2025, Wisconsin had planted over 54.7 million trees, almost 55 percent of the tree-planting goal. This success has been achieved by the extraordinary efforts of municipalities, schools, corporations, nonprofit organizations, agency partners, forest landowners and residents working together.

For more information on Wisconsin’s pledge and the story of the 50 millionth tree, visit the Trillion Trees Program webpage and subscribe to Forest Management, Ecology and Research News.

Tree seedlings grow into functioning forests that store carbon, filter water, support wildlife, and sustain the economies and communities that depend on them. Trees and forests are one of the best ways to mitigate climate change impacts such as intense rain events and extreme heat.

On Oct. 5, the Reforestation Program began taking orders for the spring 2027 planting season. Subscribe to updates from the Reforestation Program. Trees planted can be recorded on the Wisconsin tree planting map.

Wisconsin residents can also support forests by:

  • Collecting and selling tree seed to the Wisconsin State Nurseries.
  • Caring for trees in their neighborhood.
  • Supporting federal, state and local programs that fund tree planting and tree care.
  • Supporting teachers so that more can engage in the fourth-grade tree seedling giveaway.
  • Favoring wood-based products, especially Wisconsin-grown forest products.
  • Participating in programs such as the DNR’s Forest Landowners Programs, the UW-Madison Division of Extension Forestry Programs and the Aldo Leopold Foundation’s My Wisconsin Woods if you own or manage private forestland.
