Department of Safety and Professional Services Announces Q&A Sessions on LicensE

Madison, Wis. –  The Department of Safety and Professional Services is offering two question-and-answer sessions about LicensE, the department’s new self-guided, online platform that is replacing paper-based applications for occupational licenses. The sessions will include a presentation on the new platform and the opportunity to ask agency staff and technology experts about the new platform.

The first session is Monday, May 2, 2022, from 2–3:15 p.m. The second session is Tuesday, May 3 from 10–11:15 a.m. Registration is open through noon on April 25. Individuals can register HERE.

“We are excited to offer these opportunities for our customers and stakeholders to learn about our new application platform,” said DSPS Secretary Dawn Crim. “We know there are questions, and we are eager to share more about this effort. LicensE is a major step forward and will modernize our license application process.”

The Q&A sessions will enable prospective applicants, employers, educational program staff, and other health industry stakeholders an opportunity to learn what to expect from LicensE. Anyone with questions about LicensE is encouraged to register for one of the sessions.

The first phase of LicensE is launching on May 16, and nearly all health initial applications will transition to the platform on that day.  Other licenses (initial applications and renewals) will transition to LicensE in subsequent phases. As part of the preparation for the LicensE launch, the department is implementing a blackout period for new health applications. The department will accept no new initial applications for the 72 license types from 12 p.m. on April 29 through 11:59 p.m. on May 15. The black-out period is a critical step to ensuring the successful launch of this new system.

Applications received after 12 p.m. on April 29 will not be processed. Paper applications postmarked after this date will be returned to applicants. Applications received prior to the blackout will continue to be processed during the blackout, and the department will be issuing licenses during this period.

Anyone who has not yet submitted a license application is encouraged to wait until May 16 and apply in LicensE. Individuals who have already submitted an application but have not yet received a decision by the time LicensE launches should not re-apply in the new system. Duplicate applications slow processing times.

Renewals are not included in the blackout, and any license types in active renewal during the blackout window can renew during their entire renewal period. Temporary licenses related to the pandemic are also not included in the blackout.
