Democratic Party of Milwaukee County Condemns ICE Detention Facility Expansion
And Calls for the Protection of Hard Working Families and Just Immigration Reform Not Mass Deportations of our Neighbors
The Democratic Party of Milwaukee County (DPMC) thanks Ald. Larresa Taylor for finally informing the public of ICE’s expansion plans. We know that many immigrants are our neighbors and work hard and pay taxes even though they may not get credit for them. We know many immigrant children were born here and are U.S. citizens (The Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution declares that “All persons born or naturalized in the United States … are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”). We need real immigration reform to create a moral and just transition and a pathway for undocumented immigrants to legal status out of the shadows (so they can be paid fairly and receive the benefits of the taxes they pay). Intimidating our neighbors and the forcible removal of our neighbors is not the American way.
ICE’s 310 East Knapp Street facility had some office space and a few holding cells but no bed space. All law enforcement agencies in Milwaukee County are already protecting residents of the County against criminals so ICE’s attempt to expand its facilities can only mean the new MAGA administration has plans for mass deportations in our County. We call on our neighbors to oppose mass deportations and the destruction of families and in particular, expect that all elected officials who claim to be aligned with the Democratic Party to use all legal means to implement just immigration reform and oppose mass deportations. In the words of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “Now is the time to make real the promise of democracy,” and that “one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed. We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.”NOTE: This press release was submitted to Urban Milwaukee and was not written by an Urban Milwaukee writer.
