County Executive David Crowley: Honor & Protect All Women

MILWAUKEE, WI – Milwaukee County commemorates International Women’s Day and celebrates the contributions of the women who have been instrumental leading us forward. The day is also a moment of reflection as the transgender community continues to mourn the killings of three transgender women in the last nine months. County Executive David Crowley issued the following statement today:

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support, guidance, and care of the women in my life. From family members to mentors, women have helped guide my path to adulthood and help teach me the power of loving the community that raised me. As the father of three young daughters, I work each day to remind them of their strength, power, and limitless potential to make change. This Women’s History Month, I’m excited to honor the contributions of women everywhere and advocate for their continued success.

“At the same time, it is impossible to ignore the threat facing women in the LGBTQ community who’ve experienced unthinkable tragedies locally – and across the nation – in recent months. Heading into March, Milwaukee County experienced the murder of Cashay Henderson, the third transgender woman to be killed in the last nine months. Last summer, Regina “Mya” Allen and Brazil Johnson where both tragically killed in separate incidents.

“Milwaukee County cannot in good faith say we support and appreciate the contributions of women if we do not work to honor and protect all women. Black and Brown transgender women who’ve been the victims of recent tragedies in our community, deserve the same love, care, and protection as everyone else.

“As we all work to heal and move forward, I encourage members of the community to engage with the many trusted advocates, partners and resources available locally, such as the Black Health Coalition of Wisconsin, Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, and Diverse and Resilient.

“Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender women are not invisible and should be included as we celebrate the work and impact of women on the world around us. Today, we affirm our fellow neighbors in Milwaukee County, acknowledge their contributions, and support all efforts to ensure their safety and succe
