This week, the Milwaukee-based Colectivo Coffee became the largest unionized workforce of a U.S. coffee chain. The following is the congratulatory statement of Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley to the workers of Colectivo Coffee:

“Congratulations to the workers of Colectivo Coffee who successfully won their vote to form a union this week. The historic victory makes them part of the largest unionized café chain in the country.

“This is an important victory in equity that we all can celebrate. Unions play an important role in closing racial wage disparities, but the benefits don’t stop at pay increases. Increasing diversity in hiring, anti-harassment and anti-discrimination rules, loan repayment programs, and other tools to improve racial equity in the workplace have come from workers having a voice in the process. As we work to achieve racial equity at Milwaukee County, it is good to see organizations in the private sector, and their workers, contributing to our shared goals.

“I believe the owners of Colectivo will bargain in good faith, and that this will lead to higher wages, better benefits, and safe working conditions for all of Colectivo’s employees.

“Our service-sector employees deserve proper representation and the best possible working conditions, and hopefully this can serve as inspiration and a model for those in our city, state and across the country.”
