Yesterday (Tuesday, May 21), Common Council file #240184 was introduced, and which if approved, authorizes the investment of more than $8 million to calm traffic, improve bicycle and pedestrian safety, and improve public spaces and art projects in Walker’s Point.

Details of the file include a skate park to be constructed at 8th and National, necessary improvements to Walker Square Park and a Pierce Street Plaza, and several protected bike lanes. Pedestrian and bicycle enhancements will specifically be on West Mineral St., West Walker St., South 2nd St., South 9th St., West Lapham Blvd., South 5th St., and East/West Washington St.

The 6th and National TID #85 was created in 2015 to provide funding for improvements to South 5th Street from West Virginia Street to West Scott Street and bikeshare stations across Walker’s Point neighborhood. The TID has since expanded from an original $2.5 million investment to more than $12 million total.

Alderman José G. Pérez, who represents the 12th Aldermanic District, is excited about what improvements this investment would accomplish.

“I look forward to seeing these improvements further the safety of our neighbors with protected bike lanes and more pedestrian safety measures. This investment will improve the safety of Walker’s Point residents and the overall quality of life for our residents, for commuters, and visitors to Walker’s Point,” he said.

The file is expected to be taken up for final adoption at the June 11 meeting of the full Common Council.
