It’s heating up in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, at least in the race for the 7th Congressional District when it comes to the important topic of gun rights and ownership.

Yesterday, Fred Clark, a former Wisconsin legislator and Democratic candidate for Congress, had a conversation with a reporter where he described Republican candidate Michael Alfonso as a sincere, likeable young man.

Hours later Alfonso posted an outright lie on his own candidate Facebook page claiming that Clark, a long-time gun owner and hunter, “hates the 2nd Amendment.”

That could not be further from the truth. Following an exchange on Facebook, Clark responded today with photos and a video (https://www.youtube.com/shorts/S85elKKEJ2o), giving Alfonso a tour of his gun safe.

“Michael, welcome to my gun safe,” says Clark in the video. “Guns are like your tools – they each have a job to do. But of all the guns I own, my favorite is my old 30-30 Winchester 94 – I’ve shot more Wisconsin deer with this old gun than I can count.”

Clark followed up with two challenges. First, he asked Alfonso to respond with a photo of the guns he owns and uses to hunt. (Note, those owned by his father-in-law Sean Duffy do not count.)

Second, given that Alfonso has avoided debating his Republican primary opponents, even having to be represented at one debate by the host leaving an empty chair, Clark offered him a chance to debate on something more official than a candidate’s Facebook comments. “[W]hat do you say we give the voters what they deserve and let them hear your vision? My people will work with yours to set it up. Please let us know.” Alfonso replied, “I’d love to, you have my number.”

Clark is taking Alfonso at his word and will make this happen – so long as Alfonso doesn’t back down. Clark believes the voters deserve an honest debate on all of the issues that are critically important to residents of Northern Wisconsin, including gun rights, affordability, business development and quality health care.

“The Second Amendment is not going anywhere on my watch,” vows Clark. “And neither is telling the truth.”
