City-County Advisory Board on Climate and Economic Equity sets agenda for first meeting

In June of 2023, the Common Council adopted file #221233, an ordinance adopting the Climate and Equity Plan and amending the Citywide Policy Plan as part of Milwaukee’s Overall Comprehensive Plan, and directing its implementation. Included in the file was the creation of the City-County Advisory Board on Climate and Economic Equity that is tasked with reviewing the implementation of the Climate and Equity Plan as part of the City’s Citywide Plan, and submitting an annual report on the status of the Plan’s implementation to the Common Council.

The advisory board, co-chaired by Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, has set the agenda for the board’s first meeting that will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, January 29.

“The action taken by the Council last year was historic, and now we are starting off 2024 by fulfilling our promise to prioritize climate and equity by launching our advisory board that will regularly meet to discuss and measure our progress toward our progressive and ambitious goals,” said Alderwoman Dimitrijevic. “Adopting this bold plan was just the first step on a journey to stop the harmful effects of climate change. As we continue to experience extreme weather events that adversely affect peoples’ lives, we must make significant changes to our daily actions and we are doing that in city government. We can stop our over reliance on fossil fuels and must continue to invest in an electric infrastructure to support more electric transportation. The time is now to ensure a cleaner future for our next generations to come.”

The Climate and Equity Plan goals include reducing community greenhouse gas emissions 45% by 2030, achieving net zero emissions by 2050, and improving racial and economic equity by creating green jobs that pay at least $40,000 and are focused on recruiting local people of color.
