Chief Deputy Denita Ball Announces Candidacy for Milwaukee County Sheriff

MILWAUKEE, WI — The Chief Deputy of the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, Dr. Denita Ball, announced today that she will be running as a Democrat to be Milwaukee County’s next Sheriff.

Dr. Ball has dedicated her life to advancing public service in law enforcement and through higher education, with over 35 years of experience. For nearly three years, Denita has served as second in-command to Milwaukee County Sheriff Earnell Lucas. In addition to her decades of service, Denita Ball also has a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership.

“Milwaukee County is at a crossroads right now,” said Dr. Ball. “Crime, especially violent crime, is increasing at alarming rates. I’m running for Sheriff because we have to reverse this trend. We need our streets to be safe and we must do more to apprehend criminals in addition to putting in place the programs, services, and community level supports that prevent would-be-criminals from committing crimes in the first place.”

As the Undersheriff for Milwaukee County, Dr. Ball has been a pivotal part of the significant improvements that have been made in the agency, from turning around the formerly poor safety conditions in the county jail, to initiatives that have promoted inclusivity and created a more welcoming culture in the agency.

“I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve done and the progress we’ve made in the Sheriff’s Office, but I know there’s still more to do,” said Dr. Ball. “That’s why I’m running for Sheriff, to build on the progress that’s been made and to continue improving how our deputies, officers and other staff members work and interact with residents and help to make a positive difference in the community. I know that I have the experience, vision, and leadership needed to accomplish these goals and make Milwaukee County a safer and better place to live, work, and enjoy.”

Denita Ball is an active member of Providence Baptist Church, as well as various professional and community organizations including Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the Badger State Sheriffs Association. Dr. Ball lives on Milwaukee’s northwest side with her husband Odell. They have three children and one grandchild.
