Challenge: 7 Debates Across the 7th Congressional District
NORTHERN WI. Today, Democratic nominee for Congress Fred Clark issued a public challenge to his Republican opponent, Michael Alfonso: 7 debates across the 7th Congressional District before November 3rd.
“Everyone with a pulse knows our politics are broken,” said Clark. “We need to cut the nonsense and get back to basics. Citizens across the northwoods are considering which one of us to hire to serve their interests in Congress. That makes this campaign a job interview, and the voters deserve to see us side-by-side as they make their choice.”
Clark has communicated his desire for debates across the 7th directly to Alfonso, and is awaiting his reply. In the meantime, Clark has already committed to the first two debate invitations he has received from media outlets in the 7th Congressional District.

Among the debate topics 7th Congressional District voters deserve to hear directly from the candidates side-by-side on are;
- Affordability and the cost of living
- Health care costs and accessibility
- Conservation
- Rural revitalization
- Cleaning up corruption, fraud, waste, and abuse in government
- Prosperity for the Northern Wisconsin economy
- Education and workforce development
Background
In early May, Michael Alfonso posted false claims about Clark on Facebook, leading Clark to challenge him to a debate. Alfonso publicly committed, telling Clark privately to talk to his people and get it set up. Those calls and outreach were ignored.
Now that the race is down to just the two of them, it’s time for Alfonso to stop dodging public debates and leaving empty chairs in his place.
“I promise that if elected to serve the Northwoods in Congress, my focus will be on our district, not on chasing national news and helping billionaire donors or attempting to divert the focus from the real challenges we are facing in Northern Wisconsin,” says Clark. “I hope my opponent will make that same commitment and join me in providing this opportunity for the people of Northern Wisconsin to hear directly from us both.”
