Celebrate Week of the Young Child with community events

April 10 – 16 marks Week of the Young Child, a fun-filled week celebrating early learning, young children, their teachers, families and communities. Common Council President Cavalier Johnson, a longtime supporter of early childhood initiatives, is encouraging families to participate in the local events occurring right here in Milwaukee all week long.

“As a community, supporting our young people so they can grow, develop and achieve their full potential is one of our biggest responsibilities. Every year Week of the Young Child features a variety of programming and resources that help support our families and youngest residents during their most critical time of development. I’d encourage anyone with young children, or who works in this space, to take advantage of these amazing opportunities this week,” said President Johnson.

Featured events during Week of the Young Child include:

  • The Parenting Network will host a virtual discussion on Tuesday, April 13 from noon – 1 p.m. The event will feature champions of child abuse and neglect prevention and include a keynote speaker and panel discussion. Featured speakers include Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes, Common Council President Cavalier Johnson, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley and Joyce Felker, Executive Director of The Parenting Network.   • Tuesday, April 13 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Milwaukee County Disabilities Services Division and the Office of Early Childhood Initiatives will host Community Cafe: Black Families’ Perspectives on Navigating an Autism Diagnosis and Services. Guest presenters during the virtual event will include Elizabeth Drame, Tara Adams, Veronica R. Nolden and Judy M. Nardi. Registration is free and required. Email childrenservices@milwaukeecountywi.gov to register.
  • The Milwaukee Health Department and Milwaukee County Healthy Start are hosting Father Groups on Wednesday, April 14 from noon – 1p.m. the event will include a free meal, access to community resources and connections with other fathers. All men and boys parenting a child less than 18 months of age are invited to attend the event at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society, 2620 W. Center St.  Pre-Registration is required.
