Carlos Rodríguez Named Southern League Pitcher of the Year

Jackson Chourio, Jeferson Quero and Tyler Black Join Rodríguez as Southern League Postseason All-Stars

MILWAUKEEMilwaukee Brewers prospect right-handed pitcher Carlos Rodríguez today was named Southern League Pitcher of the Year by Minor League Baseball. The award was voted on by league managers, and final decisions were determined by the Commissioner’s Office.

Rodríguez joins Jorge López (2015), Zack Brown (2018) and Trey Supak (2019) as Biloxi pitchers to earn Southern League Pitcher of the Year.

Rodríguez went 9-6 with a 2.77 ERA and 152 strikeouts in 123.2 innings over 25 starts with Double-A Biloxi in 2023. He led the Southern League in ERA (2.77) and opponent batting average (.183) and ranked among league leaders in strikeouts (2nd, 152), WHIP (2nd, 1.09), innings pitched (T3rd, 123.2), wins (T4th, 9) and starts (T4th, 25). The 21-year-old was promoted to Triple-A Nashville on Sept. 20, where he struck out 6 in 4.2 innings in his lone start. He is ranked as Milwaukee’s No. 6 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline.

In addition to Rodríguez, three Shuckers – Jackson Chourio, Jeferson Quero and Tyler Black – were also recognized as Southern League postseason All-Stars.

Chourio hit .280/.336/.467 with 23 doubles, 3 triples, 22 HR, 89 RBI, 84 runs and 43 stolen bases in 122 games with Biloxi in 2023. He led the Southern League in hits (143) and total bases (238) and ranked among league leaders in runs (T1st, 84), RBI (2nd, 89), HR (T4th, 22), stolen bases (5th, 43), batting average (6th, .280), extra-base hits (6th, 48) and slugging percentage (7th, .467).

The 19-year-old was promoted to Triple-A Nashville on Sept. 18, where he hit .333/.375/.476 with 3 doubles, 2 RBI, 4 runs and a stolen base over 6 games. He is ranked as Milwaukee’s top prospect and the No. 2 overall prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline.

Quero hit .262/.339/.440 with 12 doubles, 16 HR, 49 RBI and 47 runs in 90 games with Biloxi in 2023. The 20-year-old is ranked as the Brewers’ No. 2 prospect by MLB Pipeline.

Black hit .273/.411/.513 with 16 doubles, 8 triples, 14 HR, 48 RBI, 70 runs and 47 stolen bases in 84 games with Biloxi in 2023. He ranked among Southern League leaders in OPS (2nd, .924), triples (2nd, 8), on-base percentage (2nd, .411), stolen bases (T2nd, 47), slugging percentage (4th, .513) and batting average (10th, .273).

The 23-year-old was promoted to Triple-A Nashville on Aug. 6, where he hit .310/.428/.514 with 9 doubles, 4 triples, 4 HR, 25 RBI, 35 runs and 8 stolen bases in 39 games, including a 14-game hitting streak to end the season.

He is ranked as Milwaukee’s No. 4 prospect by MLB Pipeline.
