Brewers Acquire Right-handed Pitcher Aaron Civale from Rays
Send Infielder Gregory Barrios to Tampa Bay
MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired right-handed pitcher Aaron Civale (sih-VAH-lee) from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for infielder Gregory Barrios. The announcement was made by Senior Vice President and General Manager Matt Arnold.
Civale, 29, is 33-32 with a 4.10 ERA in 103 starts over six Major League seasons with Cleveland (2019-23) and Tampa Bay (2023-24). He was 2-6 with a 5.07 ERA in 17 starts with the Rays this season (87ip, 93h, 51r, 49er, 27bb, 84k, 16hr), including a 3.82 ERA in his last 7 outings (35.1ip, 15er). He will be arbitration eligible following the season and is under club control through 2025.
Civale was originally selected by Cleveland in the third round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Northeastern University. Over five seasons with the Guardians, he went 29-23 with a 3.77 ERA in 76 starts. He went 5-2 with a 2.34 ERA in 13 starts with Cleveland last season before he was traded to Tampa Bay on July 31 in exchange for first baseman Kyle Manzardo.
Barrios, 20, signed with Milwaukee as a non-drafted free agent out of Venezuela in January 2021. He batted .325 with 1 HR and 34 RBI in 61 games for Class-A Wisconsin this season.
