MILWAUKEE – August 8, 2023 – Beans & Barley, a specialty store and restaurant located on Milwaukee’s East Side, celebrates its remarkable 50-year journey with Beans Fest, an event featuring live music, food and drink specials, vendors, and more.

Beans Fest will take place on August 12, bringing together loyal patrons, locals, and visitors alike to honor the legacy of Beans & Barley. The celebration will be held in the Beans & Barley parking lot, located at 1901 E. North Ave., starting at 11 a.m.

In advance of the celebration, 91.7FM WMSE DJ Johnny Z from the Chicken Shack will take over the Blues Hideout show for a live, remote broadcast starting at 9 a.m. Guests are welcome to get the party started early and experience music and interviews on air or in person at Beans & Barley.

The festivities start at 11 a.m. with  DJ Christreater, who is a Beans & Barley employee alumnus. At noon, the Beans Fest Stage powers up with a five-band lineup. Like DJ Christreater, all of the bands either consist of alumni or current Beans & Barley employees. Guests will be entertained by the talent nurtured by Beans & Barley over the years. The lineup includes Chase, Adorner, Double Truck, Power Wagon, and Marielle Allschwang & The Visitations.

For five decades, Beans & Barley has been more than just a restaurant and boutique; it has been an integral part of Milwaukee’s cultural fabric, fostering connections and creating memorable experiences. Beans Fest offers a unique opportunity for the community to come together and extend their warm wishes to this cherished institution.

“Our walls have been witness to countless stories, experiences, and connections that have enriched our lives beyond measure,” remarks Beans & Barley co-owner James Neumeyer. “We take immense pride in having fed notable musicians like Perry Ferrell of Jane’s Addiction and Fugazi‘s Ian MacKaye, but what truly fills us with pride is being a pillar of the East Side community – a place where our guests come to feel at home, enjoy time with loved ones, and, above all, have a great time. Hearing the cherished memories shared by our regulars warms my heart, and I eagerly look forward to the overflow of new stories and camaraderie at Beans Fest.”

Beans Fest is sponsored by 91.7FM WMSE and Lakefront Brewery. Starting at 11 a.m. guests will enjoy surprise drink specials, entertainment, and the outdoor vendor market. The event is designed to provide a family-friendly atmosphere, inviting everyone to partake in the festivities.

“We are incredibly proud to sponsor the celebration of 50 years of Beans & Barley,” says Tom Crawford, WMSE Station Manager. “As a community-driven radio station, we value the impact of local institutions like Beans & Barley in creating a vibrant city. Beans Fest will be a true testament to this beloved establishment’s rich history and lasting legacy.”

About Beans & Barley
Beans & Barley is a renowned restaurant and boutique on Milwaukee’s East Side. For 50 years, it has been a cherished gathering spot, offering delicious food, unique products, and a sense of community to all who visit. Beans & Barley’s legacy began in 1973 as a small neighborhood health-food store with just a few crocks for bulk goods and two coolers. As customers requested more items, Beans gradually expanded its offerings, responding to the growing needs of the community. In 1979, recognizing the demand for quick, hot food amid busy days, the restaurant’s all-homemade deli was born. The food was an instant hit, attracting visitors not only to shop but also to savor the unique, healthy, and delicious meals. For more information, visit beansandbarley.com.
