Award-Winning Artwork by Wisconsin Teens Returns to Milwaukee Art Museum Galleries
The 2022 Scholastic Art Awards celebrating hundreds of talented Wisconsin students is back on-site at the Museum.
Milwaukee, Wis. – February 2, 2022 – The annual exhibition celebrating young artistic talent in Wisconsin will return on-site to the Milwaukee Art Museum. Taking place February 5–March 20, in the Museum’s Schroeder Galleria, the juried 2022 Scholastic Art Awards: Wisconsin Exhibition will showcase more than 300 works by students in grades 7–12 from 128 schools across the state.
“We are thrilled to be able to present this incredible artwork by students from Wisconsin at the Museum,” said Brigid Globensky, Barbara Brown Lee Senior Director of Education & Programs, Milwaukee Art Museum. “The Scholastic Art Awards gives young artists an important opportunity to be recognized for their excellent work as they continue their artistic journey. It’s exciting to have the chance to examine and experience these works of art once again in person.”
Winners were selected out of 2,610 total submissions in categories that include architecture and industrial design, comic art, digital art, fashion, film and animation, jewelry, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.
The 133 artworks that received Gold Key Awards will go on to compete for Silver and Gold Medals at the national level, in New York City, later this year. The 209 Silver Key Awards denote statewide recognition for each artist. There were also 368 Honorable Mention awards that are not included in the exhibition.
The Milwaukee Art Museum has hosted the Scholastic Art Awards for the Wisconsin region since 1976. The program acknowledges excellence in the visual arts and encourages the artistic efforts of young people throughout the United States. Many award winners go on to achieve distinction in the fine arts, applied arts, and design, often crediting their success to early recognition they received as part of the program. A number of artists represented in the Museum’s collection were Scholastic Art Award recipients, including Nancy Burkert, Robert Indiana, David Lenz, JoAnna Poehlmann, Cy Twombly, Tom Uttech, and Andy Warhol.
Access to the 2022 Scholastic Art Awards: Wisconsin Exhibition is included with Museum admission. Tickets will be free for Scholastic Art Award entrants and their families during the exhibition.
This program is supported with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. Contributing sponsors are The Heller Foundation and Mary Ellen Heller in memory of Avis Heller, Peter and Debra Johnson, and an anonymous donor.
