The Pitch Project

Milwaukee’s contemporary art gallery, The Pitch Project (706 S. 5th St., Milwaukee, WI 53204, USA), hosts a panel discussion with Milwaukee’s film and performance artist Kim Miller, GURL DONT BE DUMB artist/curator Eileen Mueller, and Chicago’s film and video artist Oli Rodriguez. The panel will be moderated by TPP programing coordinator Aryn Kresol.  On Monday December 15, 2014 The Pitch Project Gallery will be open its doors at 6pm with the panel commencing at 7pm in the commons upstairs above the gallery.   The artists will introduce the audience to their own practice and collectively discuss the varied topics around photographic representation, feminism and queer aesthetics found within LIT UP.

LIT UP replaces white with a neon pink, illuminating modern gestures, sincere performative drinking, and the notion of camp life as both material and content. This work is the clear picture of two GURLS making serious work of hard play.  The photographs, video, and sculptural pieces are the duo’s first collaborative artistic gesture after co-curating for the past four years. GURL DONT BE DUMB is Eileen Mueller & Jamie Steele. Their playful exhibition LIT UP is on view, bathed in a pink glow, at The Pitch Project through January 18, 2015.

ABOUT THE PANELISTS

Kim Miller is a video and performance artist employing forms borrowed from modern dance, theater, and public speaking. She received her BFA from Cooper Union in New York City, and her MFA from Vermont College, and has shown her videos, performed live and combinations thereof on national tours and international shows, from China to Milwaukee.

Eileen Mueller studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art and later received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work focuses on the material history of the photograph and its role in confounding unwritten or inaccessible histories. The work forms a new lineage wherein kinship is not proximal or biological but rather rooted in community and practice. Based in Chicago, Eileen is a cofounder of LATITUDE, and one half of GURL DON’T BE DUMB in collaboration with Brooklyn-based artist, Jamie Steele.

Oli Rodriguez is a video artist based in Chicago IL.  Hereceived his BA in Psychology & Gender Studies from DePaul University, and his MFA in Film, Video & New Mediafrom the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.  He recently curated “The Great Refusal,” a citywide series of exhibitions and events dealing with queer identities in the Sullivan Galleries at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago.

How great that the Pitch Project provides studio space for 23 artists! Studio spaces (and buildings) for artists come and go in Milwaukee, so I hope that this one will stay on for a long time!
