MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources invites the public to join DNR staff and partners to celebrate the opening of the new Braille Trail at Havenwoods State Forest on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026. During the event, attendees can enjoy interactive activities and engage with community organizations that provide services and opportunities to people who are blind or visually impaired.
The new Braille Trail at Havenwoods State Forest is a 0.33-mile looped trail that includes audio and tactile elements along the trail with text in Unified English Braille. The tactile elements focus on Havenwoods history, habitat, flora and fauna. A limited number of white canes will be available to borrow for use on the trail.
Visitors are welcome to stop by between 10 a.m. and noon to join the celebration. At 11 a.m., there will be an acknowledgment and ribbon cutting for the trail. Cake will be served. If there is inclement weather, interactive activities and resource tables will be moved inside the nature center.
Funding for the project supplies and staffing was made possible through support from the Ford Bronco Wild Fund, National Association of State Parks Directors, Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin, Johnson Controls Foundation, Greater Milwaukee Foundation and Friends of Havenwoods State Forest.
Consultation and other support were provided by Audio and Braille Literacy Enhancement, Milwaukee Public Museum, Olivia Cichowlas, Lincoln Park Zoo, Milwaukee Public Schools Specialized Services and the Wisconsin Department of Health Service’s Office for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
The DNR thanks all of the organizations who have helped make this project possible and work to provide engaging ways to explore the forest. Learn more about the ways to explore and learn at Havenwoods State Forest.
