UWM’s Academic Adventurers Series: “The Great Red Island: Rediscovering Madagascar”
Gabrielle Verdier, professor emerita of French at UWM, will speak about her recent travels to Madagascar, where she spent much of her youth. With Juan-Marcos Rodriguez-Luis. Academic Adventurers talks begin at 3 p.m. in the American Geographical Society Library, third floor, east wing of the Golda Meir Library. A reception with light refreshments, sponsored by the Friends of the Golda Meir Library, follows each talk.

Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast invites families to kick, swing, hula, and blast…into Nickelodeon’s Worldwide Day of Play. Get up, get active, and transform yourself into a moving machine! Activities will include rock climbing, an inflatable obstacle course, bean bag toss, dancing, face painting, soccer, basketball, and a create-your-own healthy snack station. Not a Girl Scout? Not a problem. Just bring your family, and we’ll provide the fun. And you get to learn first-hand how Girl Scouts is a place to try new things and be yourself. Event is free and open to the public. Find out more »Hero’s Haul Fire Truck Pull – Milwaukee
Think you and your friends are strong enough to pull a fire truck? Think you can pull one faster than a group of tough firefighters? The Milwaukee Hero’s Haul Fire Truck Pull will be hosted by Milwaukee Brewing Company with the Firefighters of Local 215 and their partner, Operation Warm. The afternoon will be filled with competition, music, food and fun! Attendance is free to all ages. Teams must register to compete. All of the money raised will go to the Milwaukee Fire Department’s charitable campaigns. One of these campaigns, Warm Up Winter, provides brand new, American-made winter coats to children living in Milwaukee who need them the most. To date, they have provided 16,000 new coats to students in 36 elementary schools.

Dan Friedman’s diversity of visual material is evident in Dan Friedman: Radical Modernist, on view October 1 – December 3 in the Frederick Layton Gallery at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, with an Opening Reception and Talk by exhibit designer Christopher Pullman Friday, September 30, 6 p.m. Friedman, a design pioneer working across various media, sought to create, delight and engage with his designs, furniture and more. His legendary work is featured in this comprehensive exhibit, making its Midwest debut at MIAD. Viewers experience his unique vision, and contributions to graphic design and the broader realm of the visual arts. Highlighted in the exhibit are Friedman’s groundbreaking typography, eccentric furniture and playfully-subversive 3D objects, which were integral to both American street culture and global experimental design. This event is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday – Saturday.
