Mia Hurd makes six saves as the Golden Eagles see their seven-match unbeaten start come to an end

WACO, Texas — The Marquette University women’s soccer team (3-1-3, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) suffered its first loss of the 2026 season Thursday evening, falling 1-0 to No. 17 Baylor (6-1-0, 0-0-0 BIG12) at Betty Lou Mays Field.

The Golden Eagles battled the Bears for 90 minutes, but a late first-half goal gave Baylor the edge as Marquette’s unbeaten start came to an end.

Freshman goalkeeper Mia Hurd kept the Golden Eagles within striking distance throughout the match, making six saves. Five of those stops came in the second half, including four during the final 15 minutes as Marquette continued to look for an equalizer.

Marquette had eight shots on the night, with its best opportunities coming late in the match. Capri Oliviero, Allessandra Russo and Kaylie Sheehan each recorded a shot during the final 16 minutes.

Russo put Marquette’s lone shot on goal on frame in the 76th minute, but Baylor goalkeeper Azul Alvarez made the save.

NOTABLES:

  • Baylor held a 14-8 advantage in shots and an 8-1 edge in shots on goal.
  • Marquette recorded two corner kicks, while Baylor had four.
  • Freshman Ava Jack Shaw made her first career start.
