Abandoned Motorcycles Will Now Help Facilitate Youth STEM/STEAM Development

News conference at City Tow Lot set for TOMORROW at 9:30 a.m.

A city partnership approved earlier this year by the Common Council will launch tomorrow (Wednesday, August 19) – providing impounded motorcycles from the City Tow Lot that will help provide new learning opportunities for local youth.

The initiative will launch during a news conference at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the City Tow Lot, 3811 W. Lincoln Ave. Motorcycles headed for the program will be displayed, and media coverage is invited.

Alderman José G. Pérez, author of the legislation that created the Emerging Youth Achievement Advisory Council, said the committee was founded – in part – to explore non-traditional partnerships with youth serving organizations to create outreach activities to help foster learning opportunities, interest and innovation in STEM/STEAM (STEM means Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, while STEAM adds Arts) among Milwaukee youth. The EYAAC initiative to provide the impounded motorcycles – also authored at Council by Alderman Pérez and approved with strong support from the Council in February – features a key partnership with BikerFest Mke.

“BikerFest Mke is a tremendous Milwaukee non-profit offering youth-focused programs, including the Sliders Flat Track Racing Program, which gives youth the opportunity to work on donated motorcycles to provide hands-on experiences in motorcycle design and technology,” Alderman Pérez said.

“This initiative is a creative win-win for the Council, for the city, and especially for youth who get to develop new skills with these motorcycles. The motorcycles are the ‘hook,’ if you will, but while they are competitively racing bikes and repairing them, there is mentoring taking place as well,” Alderman Pérez said. “Discipline, learning how to win and lose with grace and humility…are all part of this initiative. BikerFest Mke participants are learning skills far beyond the race track — they are also learning life skills that will help them in the future.”

“I also want to thank our partners at the Tow Lot and the Department of Public Works for their great help in launching this important opportunity for our young people,” he said.
