Brewers Acquire Right-Handed Starter Dustin May and Left-Handed Reliever JoJo Romero from Cardinals

Send Minor League Outfielders Alexander Frías and Josiah Ragsdale to St. Louis

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired right-handed starter Dustin May and left-handed reliever JoJo Romero from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for outfielders Alexander Frías and Josiah Ragsdale. The announcement was made by President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Matt Arnold.

May, 28, has gone 5-7 with a 4.38 ERA in 21 starts this season with the Cardinals. He has 106 strikeouts in 109.0 innings pitched. Over his eight-year Major League career, he is 24-27 with a 3.99 ERA in 92 games/78 starts with Los Angeles-NL (2019-25), Boston (2025) and St. Louis (2026). He missed the 2024 season while recovering from his second “Tommy John” surgery and an esophageal tear. May has a mutual option for the 2027 season.

Romero, 29, has gone 1-3 with a 3.35 ERA in 44 relief appearances this season with the Cardinals. He is currently on the 15-day injured list recovering from an appendectomy. He has 43 strikeouts in 43.0 innings pitched and has stranded 20 of 28 inherited runners. He enjoyed his best season in the Major Leagues in 2025 as he recorded a 2.07 ERA and career-high 8 saves in a career-high-tying 65 relief appearances. Romero has pitched for Philadelphia (2020-22) and St. Louis (2022-26). He is a free agent at the end of the season.

Frías, 18, signed with Milwaukee as a non-drafted free agent from the Dominican Republic in January 2025. He split this season between the Rookie ACL Brewers (32 games) and Class-A Wilson (28 games) and batted .342 (78-for-228) with 8 HR, 62 RBI and 19 SB in 60 games. He was ranked as the eighth-best prospect in the organization according to Baseball America and 11th according to MLB Pipeline.

Ragsdale, 22, was selected by Milwaukee in the seventh round of the 2025 First-Year Player Draft from Boston College. He batted .316 (98-for-310) with 19 HR, 51 RBI and 31 SB in 86 games this season between Class-A Wisconsin (60 games) and Double-A Biloxi (26 games). He was ranked as the 22nd-best prospect in the organization according to Baseball America and 13th according to MLB Pipeline.
