CHICAGO – FEMA recently announced that federal funding for hazard mitigation projects is available to the state of Wisconsin to address flood risks. This funding will empower states to take decisive, proactive steps to protect their communities from future disasters.

Congress authorized these three projects through the Fiscal Year 2026 Homeland Security and Further Additional Continuing Appropriations Act. Funding for these projects has been made available through FEMA’s Pre-Disaster Mitigation grant program. Nationwide, 40 states and one Tribal Nation are expected to receive more than $189 million in federal funding for 125 projects.

In Wisconsin, the identified projects include:

  • $375,000 to the Iron County Forestry Department for the Saxon Harbor Lake Superior shoreline restoration project.
  • $250,000 to the village of La Farge for storm sewer improvements.
  • $150,000 to Resilient Southwest Wisconsin for regional vulnerability assessment and mapping.

Before funds are awarded, these communities must submit an application by July 22, 2026, by 5 p.m. Eastern Time. FEMA will review all applications and disburse funding only after confirming that eligibility criteria have been met.

Applications must be submitted through FEMA Grants Outcomes (FEMA GO), the agency’s grants management system. For more information, review the Notice of Funding Opportunity on Grants.gov.
