[Milwaukee, WI] – Queer, nonbinary Palestine solidarity and healthcare advocate Amy Donahue is officially running for Congressional District 4. On Friday, May 22, Donahue filed paperwork and submitted their first batch of over 1,000 nomination signatures for review by the Wisconsin Election Commission in Madison. After turning in her pages, she stayed in Madison to meet up with their sister Marie, get dinner, and cheer on the Milwaukee Monarchs at Breese Stevens Field.

The 22nd is an important date for the siblings (including another sister, Lisa, of St. Paul, MN). It’s the birthday of their sister Christine, who died from brain cancer at the age of 21, on September 1st, 2005. To mark the importance of turning in signatures on this date, Amy released the following statement:

“Christine was an amazing singer. Every May 22, I find a place in nature to listen to the five songs she recorded for us after her diagnosis. This year, I did that in Madison, after submitting my signatures, in the green space of the walking path on the site of St. Raphael’s Cathedral, which was destroyed by arson, also in 2005. My sister’s death was heartbreaking and too soon, but she died in comfort, surrounded by her family, at the same time we were watching the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. I am running for Congress because what I learned from that time and ever since, is that we all deserve equitable access to healthcare not driven by insurance systems that put profit over human needs, and that is not tied to our employment.

My second act in Congress will be signing on to Medicare for All (119th Congress H.R. 3069). Politicians say we can’t afford universal healthcare, public education, environmental protections, and so many other policies and programs essential for human thriving and flourishing. Meanwhile, those same people provide blank checks for wars, militarism, and corporate subsidies.

That’s why my first act in office will be signing Block the Bombs (H.R. 3565), to restrict arms sales to Israel. Block the Bombs is just the first step. America needs to stop putting resources and support behind any regime that bombs hospitals, shoots children, and engages in other acts of war and terrorism.

Collecting these signatures, I heard over and over from CD4 voters that they want a genocide and apartheid-free choice on the ballot. They are ready for single payer, universal healthcare. We need a representative who unequivocally values our health and wellbeing over the violence of Zionism. I will be that Representative.”

Donahue is a founding member of the Milwaukee Chapter of Healthcare Workers for Palestine, as well as a member of the Milwaukee Democratic Socialists of America, the Democratic Party of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin Electoral Socialists, and Citizen Action of Wisconsin.
