Madison, WI — State Representative Jim Piwowarczyk today issued the following statement after Governor Tony Evers signed Assembly Bill 223 into law:

“I want to thank Governor Evers for signing Assembly Bill 233 into Wisconsin Act 126 and taking an important step toward strengthening the integrity of Wisconsin’s election process. This legislation ensures that individuals circulating nomination papers and recall petitions are qualified Wisconsin electors—people who live here, vote here, and have a direct stake in our communities.”

Wisconsin Act 126 updates Wisconsin election law to require that most petition circulators be eligible voters within the state. The law includes a limited exception for presidential and vice-presidential candidates, aligning Wisconsin’s policies with federal election practices.

“This is a commonsense reform,” Rep. Piwowarczyk added. “By ensuring that those gathering signatures are Wisconsin residents, we are reinforcing accountability and maintaining public confidence in our elections. I am proud to support this effort to keep our democratic processes fair, transparent, and rooted in our communities.”

Wisconsin Act 126 is now law and will take effect according to its statutory provisions.
