Order Native Plants to Support Wisconsin’s Pollinators

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds Wisconsinites that native plant sales are popping up around the state now through early June. By planting native plants in your outdoor space, you can support the entire ecosystem by providing the most beneficial food for pollinators.

Native plant sales are offered across Wisconsin this spring as local nonprofit organizations and governments host online preorders and in-person sales, which often serve as fundraisers for conservation groups. Wisconsinites have a chance to buy plants in advance while benefiting local organizations and adding color to their garden or a patio container. While many in-person sales occur in May and June, some require orders in advance that are due in March or April.

“Introducing native plants to your yard is a wonderful way to provide habitat for butterflies, bees, birds and other wildlife,” said Amy Staffen, DNR conservation biologist for the DNR’s Natural Heritage Conservation program. “These sales by local organizations and Wisconsin native plant nurseries offer an easy way to exercise your green thumb, whether you’re a beginner or more experienced gardener.”

The DNR has compiled a list of this year’s native plant sales and also maintains a directory of native plant nurseries on the Native Plants webpage so you can order your native plants in time for late spring and early summer planting. Check the webpage periodically for new listings. Producers and plant sale hosts can contact Amy Staffen at Amy.Staffen@wisconsin.gov to get their native plant sale listed on the webpage.

More information on native plant sales, native plant nurseries, rain gardens, pollinator gardens, how-to guidance documents, plant lists and more is available on the DNR’s Native Plants webpage.
