MLAX Welcomes No. 6/7 Notre Dame on Saturday
The Marquette University men’s lacrosse team (0-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) is back in action Saturday, Feb. 14 when it takes on the No. 6 ranked Fighting Irish of the University of Notre Dame (0-0, 0-0 ACC).
Opening faceoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. CT inside the seasonal Dome at Valley Fields. ESPN+ features the broadcast, with Matt Yeazel (play-by-play) and Eric Simon (analyst) calling the action.
LAST TIME OUT
Marquette opened the 2026 campaign with a 14-7 loss to No. 20 Michigan at Valley Fields on Feb. 7. After being down 3-1, Marquette fought back early, tying the game at 4-4, but Michigan closed the half with three unanswered goals and carried momentum through the second half, including a decisive 7-0 run that pushed the lead to double digits.
RAPPIS & DETWILER EARN PRESEASON BIG EAST HONORS
The Golden Eagles placed two student-athletes on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, as graduate student Nolan Rappis earned a unanimous selection, while senior captain Peter Detwiler also garnered recognition.
Rappis, a 2025 All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, totaled 32 goals and 15 assists last season. He ranked among the top eight players in the conference in both goals and assists during the 2025 campaign.
Detwiler, the lone captain for the Golden Eagles in 2026, earned 2025 USA Lacrosse All-America Honorable Mention honors and was also named to the 2025 All-BIG EAST Second Team. During the 2025 season, he recorded 37 ground balls, seven caused turnovers, and three goals.
DETWILER NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN
Detwiler continues to collect preseason recognition after being named a Nike Lacrosse NCAA Division I Preseason All-American Honorable Mention by Inside Lacrosse, as announced on Jan. 28, 2025.
A native of Devon, Pennsylvania, Detwiler is a USA Lacrosse All-American Honorable Mention, two-time team captain, and the first Golden Eagle to receive preseason Inside Lacrosse recognition since the 2024 season, when current assistant coach Mason Woodward earned second team honors.
Detwiler joins Woodward, Ryan McNamara (2017), Liam Byrnes (2016), and B.J. Grill (2016) as the only Marquette players to earn preseason Inside Lacrosse All-America recognition.
FOREVER GOLDEN EAGLES
On the evening of Friday, September 5th, men’s lacrosse student-athletes Noah Snyder and Scott Michaud passed away in a near-campus vehicular accident.
The Golden Eagles continue to honor their legacy, united in brotherhood and inspired to carry forward the standard they helped build. The team wears helmet decals and jersey patches, incorporates their jersey numbers into team-issued gear. Head coach Jake Richard was also gifted custom shoes featuring silhouettes of Noah and Scott. At the conclusion of every team huddle, one player or coach will call out 43, with the team responding 88, ensuring their presence remains part of everything the program does.
HISTORY WITH THE FIGHTING IRISH
Notre Dame has won all 13 meetings in the series and is 2-0 against Marquette inside the Valley Fields Dome. The last time the Irish visited Milwaukee during the 2024 campaign, Notre Dame earned a 21-8 victory en route to its second-straight national championship.
The two Midwestern Catholic institutions have met every season of Marquette’s existence, except for the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign. Notre Dame claimed three one-goal victories over MU in 2016, 2017 and 2018, and hosted the Golden Eagles in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament at Arlotta Stadium.
ALL-TIME VS. TOP-20 TEAMS
Marquette has consistently challenged itself against nationally ranked competition since its inaugural 2013 season, playing 69 all-time games against Top-20 opponents and holding a 10–59 record in those match-ups. The Golden Eagles opened the 2026 season against No. 20 Michigan and are scheduled to face five additional ranked teams this year, according to the USILA Week 1 Coaches’ Poll.
The program’s breakthrough against the Top-20 came during its historic 2016 season, when Marquette recorded three Top-20 wins, including victories over No. 16 Villanova and No. 1 Denver to capture its first BIG EAST Tournament title and earn its first NCAA Tournament appearance. Marquette’s last Top-20 win came on March 18, 2023, a 12–11 victory at No. 5 Penn State.
HONORING LIAM GLEASON
Over the course of this week, men’s lacrosse coaches across all three NCAA divisions will honor the life and memory of Liam Gleason, the late Siena University (N.Y.) head coach who tragically passed away on December 3, 2025.
On Saturday against the Fighting Irish, the MU coaching staff will be wearing green ribbon LG lapel pins on the sidelines in his honor.
