MILWAUKEE – The Marquette women’s basketball team captured its fifth-straight win, defeating Providence 78-61 on Wednesday night at the Al McGuire Center. The Golden Eagles continued its hot shooting streak, connecting at a 51.7% clip from the field, their fourth consecutive game shooting north of 50%.

Skylar Forbes broke out for a team-high 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Eighteen of those points came during the second half, including two 3-pointers in the final 70 seconds. Lee Volker added 19 points with 11 coming in the first half. Halle Vice chimed in with her third double-double in a row, finishing with a 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Back-and-forth throughout the opening quarter, Marquette began to assert itself in the second after leading by just one through 10 minutes. Volker and Vice scored five each during a 12-0 run that spanned three minutes and gave the Golden Eagles a 36-23 with four minutes remaining in the half.

After Providence ended its scoreless drought with 2:45 on the clock, Bridget Utberg answered with a triple form the wing. Marquette would take a 44-29 lead into the half.

The Golden Eagles extended their advantage coming out the locker room, holding the Friars scoreless for the first five minutes. It resulted in MU’s lead growing to 24 through nine unanswered with the final three coming off the hands of Volker. Providence answered right back with the next six. The 18-point difference stood through the end of the period.

Providence trimmed its deficit down to as little as 11 midway through the fourth but Forbes closed the door with eight points in the final four minutes and Volker added her third triple of the night.
