Milwaukee Water Commons Names Adriana ‘Nanis’ Rodriguez Co-Executive Director
A lifelong Milwaukeean, Adriana “Nanis” Rodriguez is stepping into the role of Co-Executive Director at Milwaukee Water Commons. Born and raised on Milwaukee’s south side, Rodriguez brings a deeply personal understanding of how segregation, race, and access to clean, fresh water shape life in the city, and how water justice is inseparable from racial and environmental justice.
Growing up, Rodriguez rarely crossed the 16th Street viaduct that divides Milwaukee until she became a Public Ally placed at schools on the northwest side. That experience challenged her understanding of Milwaukee and revealed the strengths, creativity and assets of the whole city.
Rodriguez brings more than 15 years of experience as a social justice educator and leader to her new position. Most recently, she served as Executive Director of Public Allies Wisconsin, where she led multi-region programs focused on developing the next generation of civic leaders. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Marquette University and a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where she is pursuing a PhD in Urban Education with a minor in Africology.
Among her many accolades, Rodriguez has been recognized as one of Wisconsin’s 46 Most Influential Latino Leaders and honored by the Milwaukee City Council for her contributions to the LGBTQ+ community. She is excited to carry forward Milwaukee Water Commons’ legacy as a queer, women-led organization.
