Mark Maloney of McDonell Central Catholic High School Named Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week

The Green Bay Packers have announced that Mark Maloney of McDonell Central Catholic High School in Chippewa Falls, Wis., has been named the Packers High School Coach of the Week.

In his second stint and tenth overall season as head coach of McDonell Central, Maloney led the Macks to a 12-1 record and the first football state championship title in program history. The Macks defeated Gilman High School – the team that handed them their only regular season loss earlier in the year – to win the 2025 WIAA 8-Player Football state championship game.

Coach Maloney’s emphasis on character helped the Macks come together to achieve new heights of success.

“My number one rule and our philosophy is to be a good person,” Maloney said. “In school, at home, in the community, on the team – just be a good person. Our group this year was a family, and you heard the kids after games calling each other brothers and family. I think that cohesiveness and ability to bring everyone together, treat everyone fairly and be a good person is what this group was built on and what we will continue to build on.”

The Macks’ state championship run is a dream come true – not only for Coach Maloney and the Macks – but also for the entire McDonell Central community.

“Sometimes I still have to pinch myself to make sure this is all real,” Maloney said of hoisting the gold ball. “It was just a great week. Our community really came together. Our parent group is absolutely unbelievable, with team meals and lunches for the bus. It has been so awesome and just a great, great feeling.”

He played wide receiver and defensive end for the Macks under Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Famer Gerry Uchytil. After high school, Maloney entered the Air Force, serving four years before returning home to attend Chippewa Valley Technical College. He began his coaching career in 1992 as an assistant coach at McDonell before taking over as head coach of the Macks in 2001. After six years, Maloney took a year off before becoming an assistant at Colfax High School for two years, ultimately taking over the program for five seasons. After his time in Colfax, Maloney stepped away from football before returning to McDonell as a middle school coach. In 2022, he again accepted the head coaching position at his alma mater, beginning his second stint as the leader of the Macks.

Maloney is honored to win the Coach of the Week award but quick to share it with those around him.

“This award’s publicity for our community of people in Chippewa Falls, McDonell and the school district is just so awesome,” he said. “This is a huge honor to be picked as Coach of the Week, but the kids are the ones that did this all. It’s not about me, it’s about them.”

Maloney and his staff oversee a program of 40 players with 26 of them suiting up for varsity games. His assistant staff includes Morgan King, Gene Smith, Blake Winger and Kris Maloney. In addition to coaching, Maloney is a mechanical engineer, a role he’s held for almost 40 years. Maloney and his biggest supporter, his wife, Lita, have one daughter, Melissa, and two sons, Glenn and Alex.
