Literacy Services of Wisconsin Unveils Community Mural At New Headquarters
MILWAUKEE – Literacy Services of Wisconsin (LSW) celebrated the powerful fusion of art and literacy yesterday, Wednesday, November 19, as it unveiled a vibrant new mural by award-winning community artist Tia Richardson at its new headquarters.
The program featured remarks from artist Tia Richardson, who cited LSW’s commitment to adult literacy and collaborative nature as a source of inspiration for the mural. Richardson, an integrative community artist certified in Trauma-Informed Care from First Aid Arts, uses art as a form of healing. She developed the mural through community design workshops that allowed stakeholders to express their feelings about Literacy Services’ mission and work.
“Bringing this mural to life was a collaboration from start to finish,” said Holly McCoy-Perez, Executive Director of LSW. “From hosting community design workshops that informed the concept to inviting our community to help paint the mural, this beautiful installation serves as a reminder that every adult who comes here is not only pursuing education but is also connecting with a thriving, creative community that believes in their success.”
The unveiling was punctuated by inspiring performances from LSW student poets, whose readings highlighted the power of words and personal narrative – themes deeply connected to LSW’s mission. Local bookstores also participated, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to building a culture of reading and education within the community.
