Hispanic heritage is alive and well in Milwaukee

Statement from Common Council President José G. Pérez September 10, 2025

Later this week we will kick off Hispanic Heritage Month (runs from Sept. 15th to Oct. 15th), as we honor the deep roots the Hispanic community has in Milwaukee, and acknowledge all the ways in which the largest minority group in Wisconsin, and the fastest growing demographic in the city, contributes to our society.

However, the Hispanic pride and festivities have been in full force even before we approach the start of Hispanic Heritage Month.

August 22-25, we celebrated the 53rd annual Mexican Fiesta at Henry Maier Festival Park. This three-day celebration of community was a resounding success and remains one of the longest running festivals in Milwaukee. This past week we also celebrated Fiesta Dominicana to help bring the lively spirit of the Caribbean to the heart of Wisconsin.

In addition to this coming Friday’s Hispanic Heritage Month kick-off event in the Deer District, the César E. Chávez Drive Business Improvement District is hosting Viva Nuestra Herencia 2025 (a day of music, dance, food, and culture) on Saturday, September 13th on S. César Chávez Dr. between Mineral & Greenfield.

Importantly, the annual Puerto Rican Festival of Wisconsin is also right around the corner, taking place on Sunday, September 21st. For the first time ever, this festival will take place at the Henry Maier Festival Park, showing how the support and growth of this event has continued upward.

These events offer a snapshot into Milwaukee’s Hispanic community. The positive energy and momentum shows that despite challenges, we remain strong, proud, and resilient, and this is directly attributable to the daily hard work of the organizations that are committed to preserving Milwaukee’s Hispanic heritage and culture.
