Rep. Cruz Votes No: “This Budget Sells Out Our Future”

MADISON — State Representative Angelina Cruz cast a firm “No” vote on the state budget today, calling it “an obvious choice” and condemning it as a failure to meet the real needs of Wisconsin residents.

“This budget doesn’t fix the problem—it is the problem,” said Rep. Cruz. “Republicans gutted the Governor’s original proposal, then threw together a patchwork plan that leaves families, schools, and communities behind. They’re calling it a fix—there’s no fix here. At best, it’s a band-aid on a gaping wound.”

Cruz pointed to rising property taxes, underfunded schools, and misplaced priorities. “This budget pushes costs onto working families while giving nothing in general aid to public schools. Meanwhile, voucher and independent charter programs get a funding bump—with no accountability, no transparency, and no obligation to serve all kids.”

While acknowledging some parts of the budget she supports, Cruz emphasized that basic needs—especially education—should never be negotiable. “We are setting our kids up to fail by refusing to invest in their future. That’s not fiscal responsibility—that’s neglect.”

Cruz also expressed gratitude to constituents who fought for increased investment in public education: “To every Wisconsinite who spoke out—you were, and are, on the right side of history. I will keep fighting for what we’re owed: full funding for public schools, not crumbs. I hope you’ll keep fighting too.”

In the face of ongoing federal budget challenges, Cruz argued the state should have done more, not less. “This was a moment to lead, to protect our communities, and to invest in our future. Instead, this budget falls terribly short. Voting no was the only responsible choice. The people of this state deserve better.”
