Congresswoman Gwen Moore Blasts Trump Administration Gutting AmeriCorps Grants in Wisconsin, which will Hurt Milwaukee and Communities Throughout our State

“As an AmeriCorps alum, I am appalled to learn of the Trump Administration’s efforts to hollow out AmeriCorps, which empowers and supports volunteer services across the country. National service strengthens our communities and helps meet critical needs, like after school tutoring, disaster assistance, free clinics, and more. Every state, whether it’s red or blue, has benefited from the devoted AmeriCorps volunteers who serve food banks, staff hotlines, and work during natural disasters. I am proud that Wisconsin is joining a lawsuit challenging the Administration’s termination of AmeriCorps grants throughout Wisconsin. We must protect these vital services.

This Administration’s decision to gut Teach for America grants in my city of Milwaukee will directly harm the futures of our children, especially low-income families who directly benefit from TFA’s services.. Instead of supporting these direct services to our communities, this Administration is cutting the pipeline of new educators into the classroom as we face a national teacher shortage. These teachers are not ‘waste, fraud, or abuse.’

Other cuts will harm efforts to help address housing needs in our community as AmeriCorps Members assigned to Habitat for Humanity. Milwaukee Habitat has hosted over 100 AmeriCorps members since 2001 who have contributed to building homes and supporting families in need of safe and stable housing. And it will impact AmeriCorps Members and services supported through groups like Public Allies, Milwaukee Justice Center, the 414 Fellows AmeriCorps Program, the Milwaukee Christian Center YouthCorps and many more throughout our region and State. And the President’s FY 2026 budget request is likely to call for terminated federal support for AmeriCorps.

I oppose these cuts, and I have again joined my colleagues in pushing back against another reckless move by this Administration that hurts our communities and our nation.”
