MILWAUKEE — The Marquette University men’s golf team heads to The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, North Carolina for The Irish Creek Collegiate on Monday and Tuesday.

It is the penultimate regular season event of the spring for the Golden Eagles prior to the BIG EAST Conference Championship later this month at the Callawassie Island Club.

THE EVENT
Marquette is one of 15 teams competing in the event alongside tournament-host Appalachian State and begins Monday’s opening round on the seventh and eighth tees. The field also includes MU head coach Steve Bailey‘s alma mater, Radford University.

Thirty-six holes will be played on Monday with a 7:30 a.m. Central time shotgun start. Tuesday’s final round begins at the same time.

The tournament is a play-six, count-four team event and the course plays as a par 70.

THE COURSE
The Club at Irish Creek was designed by professional golfer Davis Love III and is ranked as one of the top 30 residential courses in the country by Golfweek. The course presents a uniquely captivating golf experience that embodies both the beauty and challenges of North Carolina’s landscape. The course honors the traditions of the game while embracing the joys of what makes playing in in the North Carolina Piedmont area so special.

MARQUETTE LINE UP
1. Max Lyons
2. Johan Widal
3. Patrick Adler
4. Ryan Banas
5. Mason Schmidtke
6. Vincent Cervantes

The Golden Eagles look for contributions from their entire lineup this week with all six student-athletes able to contribute to the team score each day.

Senior Max Lyons leads MU into play following the best finishes of his career in each of the last two events. He placed third on March 17-18 at the Johnnie-O at Sea Island with a 6-under 134 through 36 holes and fired an 8-under 208 in MU’s last event on March 24-25 at the Bell Bank “Pay it Forward” Collegiate as runner-up. Lyons has shot under par in seven of the eight rounds that he has played this spring.

Johan Widal has also picked up his play since the calendar has turned to 2025 and turned in a 6-under 66 in the opening round at the “Pay it Forward” Collegiate, bested only by a 7-under 65 from Ryan Banas.

Sophomore Mason Schmidtke will participate as part of Marquette’s lineup for the first time this season. The native of Sheboygan, Wisconsin has posted a 72.3 stroke scoring average. His 71.71 first round scoring average this season is second only to Lyons’ mark of 71.13 on MU.
