Rep. Taylor Condemns Attack on Students’ Rights
Last week, the Joint Committee on Finance voted in favor of motion #434, which eliminated the funding mechanism for the United Council of UW Students.
MADISON – Last week, the Joint Committee on Finance voted in favor of motion #434, which eliminated the funding mechanism for the United Council of UW Students, America’s oldest statewide student association. Following the vote, Rep. Chris Taylor (D-Madison) released the following statement:
“The United Council of UW Students has been fighting for students’ rights since 1960. They are the leading advocate for students on matters such as financial aid, tuition, quality education and shared governance on our UW System campuses. They successfully negotiated in good faith with Republicans in favor of a tuition freeze. Yet, Republicans still saw fit to eliminate United Council’s funding mechanism and suppress students’ voices and participation in university governance.
“Students democratically choose membership in United Council by referendum on each campus. Last week, Republicans took not only the students collective choice away, but they also took away their voice. Our students are the future of our great state. We should do everything we can to further encourage their civic engagement, not stifle it.”
