Actions Have Consequences

In a move that surprised nobody who has been paying attention, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) under direction of Ontario Premier Doug Ford imposed a 25% surcharge on all electricity exported to the United States on Monday. The province provides electricity to around 1.5 million customers in New York, Michigan, and Minnesota directly and potentially other states as the electricity provided is sometimes resold to neighboring states.

The surcharge is the latest move in the trade war that was initiated by President Trump earlier this year. The surcharge is expected to cost US based customers a combined $400,000 a day. British Columbia Premier David Eby is considering a similar move.

“Until these tariffs are off the table, until the threat of tariffs is gone for good Ontario will not relent. We will not back down. Pausing some tariffs and making last-minute exemptions won’t cut it. We need to end the chaos once and for all. Until then Ontario will keep up the fight. We will apply maximum pressure to maximize our leverage.” – Ontario Premier Doug Ford

The Libertarian Party of Wisconsin (LPWI) once again calls on President Trump to end this tax war while most Americans can still recover from the damage he has done to our economy and reputation.
