WBB Earns 20th Win of Season with 62-37 Win Over Xavier on Senior Night

Golden Eagles travel to UConn on Sunday for regular season finale

The Marquette University women’s basketball team closed outs its home schedule with a 62-37 win over Xavier on Thursday night for its fifth win in a row and 20th win on the season.

The Golden Eagles (20-8, 12-5) were led by Lee Volker and Skylar Forbes who had 15 points each. Forbes added eight rebounds, four blocks and a career-high tying three 3-pointers. Volker finished with a pair of threes and two assists.

Halle Vice finished with 12 points and five boards.

Marquette stormed out to a 19-4 lead after one, tied for the fewest opponent first quarter points this season. The Golden Eagles forced the Musketeers into 10 turnovers in the first ten minutes and 18 at the half.

The Golden Eagles led by as many as 29 in the second half and led for 39 minutes and 14 seconds of game action.

Xavier (6-22, 1-16 BIG EAST) was led by Meri Kanerva, who had 12 points and four assists.

NOTABLES:

  • Lee Volker and Abbey Cracknell were honored before the game for Senior Night at the Al McGuire Center.
  • The Golden Eagles have won 18 straight over the Musketeers, the longest active win-streak against a BIG EAST opponent.
  • Xavier’s 37 points were the fewest BIG EAST opponent total in program history.
  • Marquette forced Xavier into 26 turnovers, the highest opponent total in BIG EAST play this season.
  • Marquette finished the season with a 13-2 home record, tied for the best record by a first-year head coach in program history. MU finished 13-2 at home in Megan Duffy‘s first year in 2019-20.
  • Skylar Forbes (15 points), Lee Volker (15 points) and Halle Vice (12 points) all scored in double-figures for the eighth time this season. MU is 7-1 in those games.
  • The Golden Eagles reached 20 wins in 28 games, tied for the second-fastest road to 20 wins by a first-year head coach in program history. MU reached 20 wins in 28 games in Terri Mitchell‘s first year in 1996-97.
  • Skylar Forbes recorded four blocks tonight and has 50 on the season, setting a record for blocks by a sophomore in program history.
