Anderson Says: Take US Back from the Brink of Nuclear War

A coalition of Milwaukee peace groups, among them the Greater Milwaukee Green Party, Peace Action Wisconsin, and Veterans For Peace, Chapter 102 are asking the Common Council to join some 80 local governments in supporting the “Back From The Brink” resolution for nuclear weapons disarmament.

Josh Anderson will vote to support this resolution when elected to the Common Council.

This resolution calls on calls on United States leaders to implement the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons by taking these steps:

• Actively pursue a verifiable agreement among nuclear-armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals.
• Renounce the option of using nuclear weapons first (which China has done).
• End the sole, unchecked authority of any U.S. President to launch a nuclear attack.
• Take U.S. nuclear weapons off hair-trigger (high) alert.
• Cancel the plan to replace the entire U.S. nuclear arsenal with enhanced weapons.

“It’s time to take the world off the hair-trigger alert, and unite to fight the global climate crisis,” Anderson said. “No one benefits from nuclear war besides the giant corporations that profit from building weapons that can never be used.

“The city should also take immediate steps to divest its pension funds from the merchants of death. These are things I’ll fight for on the Common Council.”
