Volker’s Career-High Lifts Marquette over Milwaukee Sunday, 69-51

Golden Eagles travel to Bowling Green Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT

MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s basketball team continued its hot streak with 69-51 a win over Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.

Marquette (7-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) was led by Lee Volker, who had a career-high 21 points, six rebounds, three assists and a career-high seven steals. The senior guard had 19 first half points.

Skylar Forbes had her eighth double digit scoring output of the season with 18 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

The Golden Eagles led 20-10 after the first and shot 61.1% from the field in the first ten minutes, setting their highest first quarter shooting percentage of the season.

Going into the second quarter, Milwaukee took a 28-27 lead, their second of the game. After a timeout by Marquette, the Golden Eagles went on a 13-2 run over the next eight minutes to tie the largest lead of the contest, leading 40-30 at the half.

Senior guard Lee Volker and sophomore forward Skylar Forbes combined for 30 of MU’s 40  first half points.

Coming out of the locker room, Marquette held Milwaukee to six points in the third quarter, the tenth time this season holding an opponent to 10-points-or-less in a quarter.

Volker led for the Golden Eagles, posting a career-best 21 points, seven steals and six rebounds. Forbes tacked on 18 points, her seventh game in a row posting 10-or-more points.

Marquette led by as many as 21 points in the second half and led for 37 minutes and 41 seconds of game action.

Milwaukee (3-10, 0-3 HL) was led by Anna Lutz who totaled 10 points in the contest.

NOTABLES:

  • Marquette has taken 27 out of the last 28 meetings against Milwaukee.
  • First time the two teams have met since Nov. 13, 2022, when Marquette won 73-47 at home.
  • Marquette shot 53.3% in the first half, setting a new team high for the first 20 minutes of game action.
  • Volker set a new career-high 21 points, beating her previous high of 18 she had earlier this season in two road games at Illinois and Rutgers. It was her first career 20-point game.
  • Marquette forced 20 turnovers and recorded a season-high 13 steals.
