Fairer voting maps impacted 2024 state elections in Wisconsin

MADISON — New fairer maps provided Wisconsin voters with the first opportunity in over a decade to elect legislators who reflect their values and are accountable and responsive to them. New voting district maps meant more contested and competitive races.

On November 5, 2024, Wisconsin voters elected a more representative state legislature. In the State Senate, there will be 18 Republicans and 15 Democrats. In the Assembly, there will be 54 Republicans and 45 Democrats.

Forty-one candidates who support independent nonpartisan redistricting won a seat in the Wisconsin State Legislature. Send them a thank you email  and let them know you look forward to working together in the future. Find their contact information here.

Over the last five years, the Wisconsin Fair Maps Coalition built the capacity and the infrastructure that brought a temporary end to undemocratic gerrymandering in Wisconsin. It was done through grassroots people power. But the current, fairer voting district maps are a temporary fix to the long-term problem of partisan gerrymandering.

“Only a constitutional amendment can assure Wisconsin voters that our voting maps will remain fair and just, that elected representatives reflect the values of their constituents, and that those representatives are accountable and responsive to the communities they represent,” said Carlene Bechen, retiring Organizing Director for the Wisconsin Fair Maps Coalition, “The Coalition’s long-term goal is to achieve this permanent solution before the 2030 US Census so the next round of redistricting is truly fair. We invite all Wisconsinites to join us for the next phase in our work together to achieve a permanent solution to partisan gerrymandering in our state.”
