MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers announced today his appointment of Andrew Burdick to serve as Crawford County District Attorney. The appointment fills a vacancy created by former District Attorney Lukas Steiner’s appointment to the Crawford County Circuit Court. Burdick will serve for the remainder of the unexpired term that ends January 2025.

“Andrew Burdick’s experience as both a defense attorney and as a prosecutor will serve him well as the next Crawford County District Attorney,” said Gov. Evers.

Since July 2023, Burdick has been an assistant district attorney in the La Crosse County District Attorney’s Office, where he prosecutes sensitive crimes, including sexual assault and domestic violence. He also is the district attorney’s office representative for the La Crosse County Veterans Court. Previously, he was a criminal defense lawyer in Southwestern Wisconsin, including three years as an assistant state public defender in the Lancaster Office. During this time, he worked predominantly in Crawford and Grant Counties, where he also served on the drug treatment courts.

“Andrew Burdick will be a great asset to the people of Crawford County,” said La Crosse County District Attorney Tim Gruenke. “He has the intelligence, experience, and modesty needed to be the district attorney. He has experience with victims, with treatment courts, and with prosecuting serious cases and will be an impactful leader for Crawford County.”

Burdick is a graduate of Alma College and the University of Wisconsin Law School. He will be relocating to Prairie du Chien to serve in this position.

“I am very honored to accept Gov. Evers’ appointment as the next district attorney of Crawford County,” said Burdick. “I began my legal career practicing in Crawford County and am excited to be given the opportunity to return and serve the community. The county has a rich history, and I look forward to continuing the traditions of professionalism, fairness, and the passionate pursuit of justice for all set forth by my predecessors. I am deeply grateful for all the support that I have received, and would like to thank my friends, colleagues, and mentors in the legal community of southwestern Wisconsin.”
