Gov. Evers Applauds WHEFA for Helping Wisconsin Nonprofit Organizations

MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers today commended the Wisconsin Health and Educational Facilities Authority (WHEFA) for another successful year assisting Wisconsin nonprofit organizations.

“Supporting nonprofit organizations in all 72 counties has been a priority for our administration since Day One, and we are celebrating another successful year thanks to our partners at WHEFA, who play a vital role in ensuring nonprofit organizations of all types have access to low-cost, tax-exempt financing to continue and expand their good work,” said Gov. Evers. “I’m proud to say that this last year, WHEFA provided invaluable support to organizations across the state—specifically our acute care hospitals, senior care facilities, schools, and other community-based service organizations—and I look forward to continuing our partnership in 2024.”

As noted in WHEFA’s 2023 Fiscal Year in Review, WHEFA completed 18 financings for Wisconsin nonprofit organizations totaling more than $740 million and saving those organizations in excess of $19 million. It is estimated that the projects supported by these financings will help create an estimated 181 new jobs, while an estimated 1,646 construction jobs will be created for new capital projects. The 18 different nonprofit borrowers that benefited from bond proceeds during WHEFA’s fiscal year 2023 included four long-term care facilities, four acute-care facilities, five educational facilities, and five other nonprofit organizations. Combined, these organizations employ more than 29,000 people and span 11 Wisconsin counties.

“We are very thankful for the support of the governor as we continue to serve nonprofit organizations throughout Wisconsin during these unprecedented times,” said WHEFA Executive Director Larry Wiemer. “We look forward to continuing to be a resource, educator, and partner to nonprofit organizations throughout Wisconsin as they look to fund their capital needs.”

WHEFA, created by the Wisconsin State Legislature in 1973, has been providing active capital financing assistance to Wisconsin nonprofit organizations since 1979. Bonds issued by WHEFA do not utilize any state funds or constitute an indebtedness of the state. The state has no liability to repay any obligation issued by WHEFA under any circumstances.
