Deadly crash was no accident

Statement from Alderman Joe Dudzik February 23, 2015

By - Feb 23rd, 2015 04:06 pm

My heart goes out to the loved ones of the man and woman killed yesterday afternoon in the hit-and-run wreck in the 11th District at the intersection of S. 84th Street and W. Wilbur Avenue.

A stolen 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe with several people inside was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on W. Wilbur Avenue when it failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a southbound 1999 Buick Century occupied by the two victims. The people in the stolen Tahoe tried running from the scene, but four of the occupants were quickly apprehended by Milwaukee police officers, and the suspected 18-year-old driver was arrested last night (and will be charged in the case very soon).

Police say the vehicle was stolen on February 19 with the keys inside. It is truly unfortunate that auto theft occurs so regularly in our city, and residents need to make sure they NEVER leave keys inside an unattended vehicle. As this incident illustrates, giving a car thief your keys could result in a tragic and fatal outcome.

It is my sincere hope that the individuals responsible for this double fatality receive the harshest possible penalty allowed under the law.
