MILWAUKEE: April 3, 2023 Crossroads Collective is thrilled to welcome Nute’s Café to the East Side food hall, with an open date set for April 21, 2023.

Nute’s Cafe is a brand-new farm-to-table concept from owner and chef Jonute Svien, a military veteran who derives the inspiration for Nute’s Cafe from his multi-layered heritage, passion for travel, and high-quality local ingredients.

The Café will serve a variety of delicious, healthy meals consisting of salads, warm bowls, sandwiches, smoothies, and rotating soups. The vibrant menu, which includes a bright Mango Lassi, a slightly spicy Chipotle Pork Sandwich, a classic Italian Sandwich, a mouthwatering Yellow Coconut Curry Bowl, and more, prioritizes fresh and nourishing ingredients while supporting local farmers. In fact, much of the produce featured on the Nute’s Café menu comes from Springdale Farms in Plymouth, Wisconsin.

“My mother was an inspirational cook, and as soon as I was old enough, you’d find me in the kitchen cooking her favorite Mexican dishes alongside her,” says chef and owner, Jonute Svien, “As an adult I felt inspired to travel to my home country of Romania, and then anywhere else a plane could take me. I’m proud to have built a menu showcasing my passion for international cuisine.”

While Svien’s interest in cooking began at a young age, his career as a chef began when he moved to Chicago for culinary school in 2012. After culinary school, he worked in a number of restaurants in Chicago and Milwaukee before opening his own food truck in 2015.

Svien put his culinary career on hold to join the United States Navy in 2016. After three years of service, he experienced an on-duty accident and was medically discharged. Looking back, he describes his discharge as a blessing in disguise—it allowed him to continue pursuing the dream to open his own restaurant.

Svien is committed to honoring veterans. On April 20th, the Milwaukee veteran community is invited to an exclusive veteran-only soft opening at Nute’s Café between 1pm – 6pm. Additionally, veterans will receive 10% off at Nute’s Café every day.

“We’re excited to not only welcome Nute’s Cafe to Crossroads Collective but also Jonute himself,” says Paige Hammond, general manager of Crossroads Collective, “the passion he has for his cuisine, local ingredients, and our city is an inspiration to our entire team. We can’t wait until the rest of Milwaukee gets to know him too.”

Nute’s Cafe is set to open in the stall formerly occupied by Ruta’s Vibrant Indian Café, which has moved to a brick & mortar storefront at 207 W. Freshwater Way in Walker’s Point.

Crossroads Collective food hall provides vendors like Nute’s Cafe with shared resources to test new concepts and bring new flavors to Milwaukee’s East Side neighborhood.
