Police staffing study provides array of valuable recommendations

Joint statement from Common Council President José G. Pérez and Public Safety and Health Committee Chair Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa

This Friday, February 24, there will be a special meeting of the Public Safety and Health Committee at 9 a.m. to discuss the recently concluded staffing analysis of the Milwaukee Police Department conducted by Matrix Consulting. The Common Council previously allocated funding for this study to analyze Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) capacity and deployment options as a means to increase department efficiency and improve safety.

This study and the myriad of recommendations it contains deserve nothing less than a thoughtful, thorough, and transparent discussion as we consider the future of public safety and policing in Milwaukee.

During Friday’s meeting we hope to garner a fuller understanding of the means of accomplishing many of these goals. Some can be done by Common Council action, but the vast majority requires action by the independent Fire and Police Commission, coordination with the Milwaukee Police Association, or in some instances even a change in State law. We are excited by the prospect of using this study as a platform of collaboration between all of these vested entities.

As we continue to experience a time of acutely high violence combined with increasingly limited public resources, it is our hope that by sharing these findings we can push forward a plan of action with our partners at the Fire and Police Commission, within MPD, and anyone else who is willing to come together in the name of creating a safer community for everyone.
