WisDems Statement on Ron Johnson Voting Against the Women’s Health Protection Act
MADISON, Wis. – In response to Ron Johnson voting against the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would be a critical step in protecting access to abortion against the onslaught of political attacks aimed at blocking access to health care, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Senate Communications Advisor Philip Shulman released the following statement:
“Ron Johnson has taken every opportunity to undermine Wisconsinites’ freedom to make their own decisions about their health care. Whether it’s calling for Roe v. Wade to be overturned or supporting extreme legislation that would block an individual’s ability to access abortion care, Ron Johnson’s self-serving agenda comes ahead of Wisconsinites’ ability to make their own personal health care decisions.”
Additional Background:
- When discussing the impact repealing Roe v. Wade would have, Johnson stated: “I don’t view that [as] such a huge threat to women’s health. I think – I think things would be just fine.”
- Johnson said if individuals don’t like the abortion laws in their state, they simply “can move.”
- Johnson has advocated for a federal ban on abortion after 20 weeks, jeopardizing the reproductive rights of millions across the country.
- Johnson joined 43 of his Senate Republican colleagues and signed on to an amicus brief in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that urged the Supreme Court to uphold Mississippi’s law that banned abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy.
