Rep. Robyn Vining: Statement on Passage of Special Session Unemployment Assistance Legislation

MADISON – Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly unanimously passed January 2021 Special Session Senate Bill 1 as amended to address urgent issues related to the state’s unemployment insurance (UI) system. This legislation is aimed at helping Wisconsinites get the support they need during the COVID-19 pandemic during a time of unprecedented unemployment rates. State Representative Robyn Vining (D-Wauwatosa) issued the following statement in response:

“Wisconsin workers and families are suffering from the economic impact of this public health crisis, and we must ensure they have the resources to make ends meet. Removing the unnecessary barriers to unemployment assistance so Wisconsinites can access these resources as quickly as possible is essential, especially as we head into the 12th month of this pandemic.

“The pandemic has laid bare the long-standing problems in our state’s UI system and this bill is a step in the right direction in addressing these long term issues. Like many issues related to the pandemic, there is more work that we can and should do.”

“I look forward to continuing the work with my legislative colleagues and Governor Evers to further improve this system so no Wisconsinite has to wait for the critical support they need and deserve.”
