2-year-old shooting a sobering reminder of the importance of gun safety
Statement of Common Council President Cavalier Johnson January 25, 2021
On Friday evening, a 2-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the hand. Thankfully the boy is in stable condition and the event was non-life threatening.
It is suspected this incident was self-inflicted, and presents a sobering reminder of the importance of gun safety for those who choose to exercise their Second Amendment right. Gun safety best practices call for making sure your gun is unloaded at all times unless it is in use; storing it in a locked, secure location away from children; and placing the ammunition in a locked, secure location separate from the gun.
For those in need of a gun lock there are many free options available. Free gun locks can be obtained at most Milwaukee Police Department district stations, Milwaukee fire stations, or by contacting the City’s Office of Violence Prevention at (414) 286-8553.
Gun locks can save lives, and should be a staple of responsible gun ownership. I encourage those in need to utilize one of the many free options available.
