Extensions for vehicle emission testing end July 31, 2020
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation reminds motorists in southeast Wisconsin, who were required to complete an emissions test after March 12, that extensions for vehicle emissions testing end July 31, 2020. WisDOT extended the timeline for emissions testing as a response to the public health emergency.
“In March and April, some emission testing facilities suspended operations due to COVID 19. However, for the past several weeks, the program has been functioning with nearly all facilities operating. Normal testing has been in place again for some time,” DMV Administrator Kristina Boardman said.
In cooperation with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) as required under state law, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) implemented the emission extensions in March 2020. Registration renewal was not extended because renewals can be completed online(wisconsindmv.gov/renew), by mail or through a third party.
After July 31, vehicle owners should get their vehicle emission tested before renewing their registration. A list of testing facilities is available at wisconsinVIP.org.
Vehicle owners can use DMV’s license plate search to find out when their plates expire or to check if an emission test is required for their vehicle.
