Social Impact: Entrepreneur Showcase

April 20, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Featuring Rachel Sumekh, Founder & CEO of Swipe Out Hunger.

Social entrepreneurship is defined as, “an approach by companies and entrepreneurs, in which they develop, fund and implement solutions to social, cultural, or environmental issues.”

Today, over 90% of young professionals want to use their talents in a way that will affect positive change. While money is always a determining factor when seeking a new role, young entrepreneurs and job seekers are increasingly putting passion over profit.

Come check out the Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise Center at Concordia University Wisconsin and hear stories from Rachel Sumekh of Swipe Out Hunger and other young people who have decided to become social entrepreneurs.

Keynote:

• Rachel Sumekh, Founder & CEO of Swipe Out Hunger

The organization is the leading nonprofit in addressing hunger amongst college students. Her work has been recognized by The Obama White House, The New York Times and landed her on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list. Swipe Out Hunger began in 2010 with a few friends as a college project at UCLA. Since, it has grown onto over 80 universities, serving 1.7 million nourishing meals. Their innovative approach allows university students to donate the unused funds from their meal plans to food insecure peers. Earlier this year the organization was called upon to author a piece of legislation to address college student hunger. The state of California adopted the legislation and put $20+ million behind it. Before launching Swipe Out Hunger full time, Rachel followed her millennial urge to change the world and served those facing poverty as a case manager in Chicago. Rachel serves on the board of her spiritual community, IKAR, and is a proud graduate of UCLA. She credits her upbringing as the child of Iranian Jewish immigrants for her intersectional perspective.

Additional Speakers:

• Kurt Owens, Concordia University Wisconsin alumni and Founder of Bridge Builders

• Anghelo Gangano (Introduction), Concordia University Wisconsin Student Working on Aquaponics
